ASH! 
Ash Ketchum is 10 years old his dream is to become a Pokemon master someday and travels the pokemon world with his best friends Brock and Misty. In the original Game Boy game you play as Ash who chooses from Squirtle Bulbasaur and Charmander at the start of the game whereas in the cartoon series, he sleeps in so all Professor Oaks starting Pokemon from the game are taken, and is given Oaks last Pokemon- a Pikachu who refuses to go in it’s Poke-ball. Pikachu dislikes Ash to begin with but when Ash saves it from a bunch of Spearows Pikachu trusts him.
Ash has a large rivalry with Oak’s grandson Gary who turns up during the course of the game and t.v. Series trying to show Ash up and boasting about how many more pokemon he has than Ash .(e.g in ‘Showdown at the Poke-corall’ Ash’s Krabby appears Gary brings out his Krabby which is twice the size of Ash’s also in this ep they have a huge argument about the best way to raise Pokemon)
He tries to stay focused on his goal but gets side tracked by other things a lot, especially when he’s supposed to be training for the Pokemon League .Ash can sometimes say things where he tries to be serious but ends up messing up (e.g. in ‘Showdown at dark city’ after a meeting with the Yas gym leader Ash has just given a really dramatic speech he says ‘Now THAT was dramatic- he then slips on some ketchup on his way out and says ‘That was pathetic!)
He listens to Brock for advice and occasionally Misty who he usually ends up insulting or in a fight with her about anything and everything!
 
 

BROCK! 
Brock is the leader of the Pewter City gym and specialises in rock Pokemon. After Ash battles him in the T.V. series, (he loses the first time but after being helped by Brocks father, Flint, he goes back and tries to win the Boulder Badge and is about to beat Brocks Onix, thanks to the sprinklers going off, when he has a change of heart and says he will return one day and challenge him again. As he leaves Pewter City Brock chases after him and gives him the Boulder Badge telling Ash he’s earned it.) He travels along with Ash and Misty. Brock is the most sensible and level-headed of the trio (unless there’s a beautiful girl around!) He usually ends up stopping fights between Misty and Ash and hopes to be the best Pokemon breeder in the world.
Brocks one weakness is beautiful girls (as mentioned above) whenever he sees one he acts all crazy, but is usually turned down by each one! His favourites include Officer Jenny’s and Nurse Joys and he can tell the difference between each one. He confessed his feelings to Flurinda in the Make Room For Gloom ep, but he took too long and turned round to face Ash after a long speech of how much he loved her! While Flurinder was in the middle of telling Potter (the gardener) how much she loved him! Ash and Misty usually tease him about it. Brock eventually stays on Valencia Island with Professor Ivy in the anime so he can learn to become a better breeder but rejoins Ash and Misty in the third season. Brock is older than both Ash and Misty I think he is around 16 but i'm not really sure how old he's supposd to be. Brock is my favourite character in the series and I think he is sometimes overlooked by people-although there are some great Brock only websites out there:check out the Anipike Pokemon links page for Brock o Rama, and Brock Maniacs(a couple of my favourites)
 
 

MISTY!
Misty is the leader of the Cerulean City Gym and specialises in water Pokemon. She follows Ash in the T.V series after he destroys her bike. Ash returns with her to Cerulean City to battle for the Cascade Badge He challenges her sisters to a battle they refuse saying they have just been defeated by three kids from Pallet Town and are about to hand over the badge when Misty appears and challenges him to a battle. The battle seems pretty even until Team Rocket interrupts and tries to steal all the Pokemon. Mitsui’s sisters then give ash the cascade badge for helping to save the gym. Misty is NOT happy about this as she insists she would have beaten him had the battle continued.
Misty is 11-13 I’m not sure how old she’s meant to be but I think it’s probably a bit older than Ash but younger than Brock. Misty want’s to become the ‘worlds best everything’ one day (Showdown at Dark City) and travels along with Brock and Ash after Ash totally destroyed her bike and says she won’t stop following him till he pays her back for it.
Misty’s pretty hot headed and usually ends up hitting Ash or Brock over the head with one of her many mallets. Her Pokemon include Psyduck, Starmie, Staryu, Goldeen and Togepi (Horsea who she gave away to her sisters). Ash found an egg in the ‘Attack of the prehistoric Pokemon’ ep which later hatched in to Togepi. Ash, Brock, Misty, Jessie, James and Meowth battled to see who gets to keep Togepi (Who gets to keep Togepi-ep) Ash won the battle but Misty was the first person that Togepi saw when it hatched and thinks of Misty as it’s mum.
 
 

JESSIE!
Jessie is the female member of Team Rocket (just so you know as you might get confused ‘cos James dresses up as a woman so much!!!). She’s  more focused on their mission than James and Meowth as all they want to do is eat! Her goal is to capture Pikachu and to become a well known member of Team Rocket. She’s very fashion conscious and cares about her looks (as in ‘The Battling Evee Brothers’ Misty: ‘You old hag.’ Jessie: WHAT? HAG? OLD? With steam coming out of her ears!-it’s better to watch than read). She often attacks James with a fan for being distracted from the mission in hand or asking when will they next eat, and Meowth for scratching her face (You DON’T mess with Jessie’s face or hair ( Watch ‘Tracy gets bugged’ for a cool example of this).
 From what we know of her background she didn’t have a very happy childhood her mum used to make meals out of snow-snowrolls (see ‘Snow way out’ep) and was less well off than James (a given as James is loaded.) Jessie met James at Pokemon Tech (‘The school of hard knocks’ep) but were both so sure they’d pass didn’t study and went out partying the night before the big exam.(Naturally they flunked out with the lowest marks ever in the history of the school.) Jessie and James both belonged to a biker gang where Jessie was know as ‘Big Jess’ because she would swing her chain in the air while riding(?!?).
Jessie has two Pokemon- Ekans=Arbok who she was given for one of her birthdays and Lickitung who she captured in ‘Princess Vs Princess’. No one is really sure how old Jessie is supposed to be but I think she is about 17 or 18.
 
 

JAMES!
James is the Male member of Team Rocket but he acts and dresses up as a woman rather a lot(?!). He even kissed Ash when he was a hula girl!!!! (‘Holiday at Acapulco’ was never show outside Japan as was too controversial. He was taking part in a swimsuit competition where he wore an inflatable body suit with brests!?! He was a very well off child because his parents were loaded, he ran away as his arranged fiancée, Jessiebell (I have no idea how to spell it!) was too tough on him and tried to teach him how to do things ‘properly’. (‘Don’t go, I haven’t taught you the right way to eat spaghetti yet’ you need a Texan accent for this!! ‘Holy Matrimony!’ep).
After he ran away from home he went to Pokemon Tech where he met Jessie as mentioned above. He also joined the same biker gang as Jessie where he was known as ‘Trainer Jim’. This is because he was the only member of the gang with trainer wheels!! He returned home in episode 45 H.M. because he was supposed to inherit a fortune when his parents died. James’ butler was travelling around looking for him as his parents were said to have died. James returned with Jessie and Meowth to claim his money but when he arrived he found his parents alive- it was all a scam to get James to come home and marry Jessiebell (who bears a striking resemblance to Jessie!) After a battle with Jesseibell he managed to get away and carry on with Team Rocket.
James owns three Pokemon: Koffing=Wheezing, Victreebell (who will NOT listen to him and ends up trying to eat him!) and Growlie his Growlith who he left back at his mansion to look after his parents. He did own a Magikarp (‘Battle aboard the St Anne’) but threw it in the sea, thinking it was useless, where it evolved in to Gyrados and it wouldn’t listen to him! James is probably about the same age as Jessie 17-again, no one is certain.
